From 1 May 2026, pet ownership in rented homes is entering a new era. As part of the Renters’ Rights Act reforms, tenants will gain the right to request permission to keep a pet, and landlords will no longer be able to issue blanket “no pets” bans.

But these new rules don’t mean unrestricted pet ownership.
