An energy performance certificate is very similar to the graph found on the side of many domestic appliances. A certificate gives the building a rating from A to G. Property rated as band A are most likely to have lower fuel bills than those rated band G. A certificate also indicates the environmental impact of the building but indicating its carbon dioxide emissions.

Since the 1st October an energy performance certificate is required for the sale or rent of most homes.

Energy performance certificates can only be produced by an accredited energy inspector who has passed a series of examinations and has also passed a criminal records check.
